Alex: The app is free. No subscription. No ads you can see. Millions of users.
Jordan: So how does it make money? Somebody is paying for those servers. Somebody is paying those engineers.
Alex: If you are not the customer, you are the product. Your attention is being sold to someone. You just were not invited to the negotiation.
Jordan: Every free thing has a price. The question is always who pays it, and who collects it.
Alex: Welcome to Incentives, Decoded. I am Alex.
Jordan: And I am Jordan. This is chapter four, Follow the Money. Last time, you learned to ignore what people say and watch what they do. Stated versus revealed. Today, we take it further. Because every action has a payoff, and every payoff flows to someone. One question cuts through everything. Who profits if this happens?
Alex: It sounds cynical. It is not. It is just physics. Money flows toward value, and behavior flows toward money. Find the money, and you find the real reason things happen.
Jordan: And once you can see who gets paid, you stop being confused by the world.
Alex: Let me show you. You go to a financial advisor. Free consultation. Nice office. He recommends a mutual fund. Seems helpful.
Jordan: What he does not mention is the five percent commission. There is an identical fund that pays him nothing. Guess which one he recommended.
Alex: His stated game is help you retire. His revealed game is maximize my commission.
Jordan: Compare a fee only advisor. You pay her directly. She makes the same money either way. Suddenly her advice gets honest. Same person, different payoff, different behavior.
Alex: Do not ask if someone is good or bad. Ask how they get paid. He is responding to his incentive, exactly like you would.
Jordan: Here is the deeper pattern. Every system has a money trail. And the money trail always explains the behavior.
Alex: Wonder why your phone is designed to keep you scrolling? Follow the money. The app makes money from ads. More scrolling means more ads. So every notification, every infinite feed, every red badge is engineered to capture one more minute. Not because engineers are evil. Because the money flows that way.
Jordan: Wonder why healthcare feels so expensive and so impersonal? Follow the money. In a fee for service system, every test and procedure generates revenue. The system does not get paid for keeping you healthy. It gets paid for treating you. So it treats you. A lot.
Alex: This is not a conspiracy. It is just incentives doing their job. Money is the most legible incentive humans have. It leaves a trail. And if you learn to follow that trail, the world stops being mysterious.
Jordan: The rule is simple. When something does not make sense, you have not found the money yet. Keep looking. There is always a payoff. Always.
Alex: So let us look at your life. Who profits from your habits?
Jordan: That subscription you never use. Someone profits every month you forget to cancel. They designed the cancel button to be hard to find. That is not an accident. That is the money trail.
Alex: Your social media habit. Every hour you scroll is inventory sold to advertisers. You are working a job you did not apply for, generating revenue you never see.
Jordan: And the bigger one. Who profits from your attention at work? Your employer profits when you stay late. The guru profits when you buy the course. The politician profits when you stay outraged. Everyone has a money trail. Including the people advising you.
Alex: This is not about becoming paranoid. It is about becoming literate. Once you see the trails, you can decide which ones you want to feed.
Jordan: What do you do with this? Three moves.
Alex: One. Before any decision, ask who profits if I do this. Buying a product? Someone gets a cut. Taking advice? Someone has an angle. Reading the news? Someone sells the attention. Five seconds, total clarity.
Jordan: Two. Align the payoffs. Want honest advice? Pay for it directly, so the advisor profits when you win. Want a team that cares about quality? Reward quality, not speed. The principle is universal. Make sure the person helping you gets paid when you succeed, not when you comply.
Alex: Three. When something is free, find the real customer. Free app? Advertisers are the customer. Free content? Your attention is the inventory. Free advice? Ask what the advisor sells. There is no free. There is only paid by someone else.
Jordan: And the advanced move. Follow the money on yourself. What are you paid to do? Not your job description. Your actual paycheck logic. Once you see it, you will understand half your own behavior.
Alex: The trail is always there. You just have to look.
Jordan: Next time, in chapter five, Systems Get What They Reward, we zoom out again. Because it is not just people. Whole systems produce exactly what they reward.
Alex: Thanks for listening to Incentives, Decoded, chapter four. Now go find the trail.
